The Art of Living If there was ever a book about life 101, this would be the one. Bob Proctor of course is known as a legend in the personal development field as well as for his appearance in the movie, The Secret. In Bob Proctor style, this book is conceptual and a bit ethereal. But it is equally specific with concrete information on how to get what you want out of life. A very empowering book.
Louder Than Words In my opinion (and hey, these are my book suggestions), I think this may be one of the most important books of our time. In an age when authenticity in business is demanded, nothing is more important than harnessing the power of your authentic voice. Absolutely loved this book!
Stand Out In today’s noisy marketing world you have to stand out. You need a unique idea, to build a platform and inspire people to follow you. Dorie Clark has created the playbook for business today in this thoughtful, action oriented book.
The Myths of Creativity There are all sorts of things people about creativity that simply aren’t true. Like the Eureka Myth that great ideas just “come to people.” The truth is great ideas are lying in incubation waiting to be born. There are many great lessons about creativity in this book and it’s a lot of fun to read.
Less Doing, More Living I interviewed Ari Meisel about this book for our special New Year’s episode on Creative Warriors because I thought it was the best way to approach a new year. While everyone else is setting goals to accomplish big things, I thought it was a more important lesson to learn how to live your life more by doing less. This book is also chock full of really great technology suggestions that you can use.
Monster Loyalty Whether you like her music or not (and I do), one thing I think we can agree on is Lady Gaga knows how to create a community of fanatical fans. Which is what inspired Jackie Huba to write a business book about Lady Gaga. There are many fascinating insights in this book. Get the real story behind the infamous meat dress. It’s all strategy but what you’ll realize is it’s all about appealing to the 1% of her audience who totally get her, and she them, that creates a loyal bond that is hard to break. You will gain many valuable business skills in a fun book to read.
The Miracle Morning When you’re a Creative Warrior, building a business based on your talent and skills, nothing is more important than taking care of yourself. Chances are, without you, you wouldn’t have a business. This book will show you the benefits of a morning routine for self-care and inspire you to finally take action like none other. It should be required reading it’s that good.
The Big Leap This book is not for everyone. But when the time is right. When you know deep in your gut that it’s time for more in your life. Then there is no better book. This is THE book for when you are ready to take the big leap in your life and bust through self-imposed glass ceilings. If the time is right for you, this is a life changing book like no other in my opinion.
The End of Jobs This business book offers a very optimistic viewpoint for entrepreneurs in the years to come. Author Taylor Pearson suggests that there’s never been a better time to be an entrepreneur. With all the technology available and the fact that people want to create lives of freedom and fulfillment like never before, it may in fact be the end of jobs.
Geography of Genius This book is genius! It reads like an adventure novel while providing valuable research about why there have been pockets of genius throughout the world. Places like Athens, Florence, Vienna and others. Is it the environment that creates the genius or is the environment created by the genius? It’s up to you to decide after reading this outstanding book. Highly recommend!
Tough Cookies Don’t Crumble You have to be a tough cookie to be rejected by every medical school in the U.S. and then, when finally accepted at the last minute, enter pregnant and single. This personal story is entertaining and full of wisdom. Just a blast! If you need a lesson in being relentless and persistent, this book is perfect for you.
Smart Change This may be the best book about creating and embracing change I have ever read. Insightful and strategic at the same time. Highly recommend!
It’s Never Too Late To Begin Again The follow up to The Artist’s Way, 25 years after it was originally written! Written specifically for the millions that read The Artist’s Way for this new stage of life. The book is a 12 week course. Fantastic and interviewing Julia for Creative Warriors podcast was a highlight of my career. Inspiring and insightful book!
Brain Audit If you’re interested in knowing what motivates people to buy and what causes them to hesitate (and if you’re in business, who doesn’t?), this book is a must. Completely taps into human behavior to serve others. Perfection!
Do Cool Sh*t You will probably feel like a slouch after reading this book! What Miki Agrawal has accomplished in her young life is remarkable. Truly awe inspiring! If you want to think big and out of your cozy comfort zone, this is the book.
Die Empty Don’t let the title mislead you. It’s actually a book about living your life so fully you have nothing left to give. So you “Die Empty”. Excellent!
Procrastinate on Purpose Rory Vaden introduces us to the new era of time management and highly successful people called Multipliers. Gone are the days of micro-management, to-do lists and priorities. Multipliers plan their days around what is significant. The book is guaranteed to immediately initiate some productive action steps as it did for my business!
Picture Your Prosperity This is undoubtably, in my opinion, the best book I’ve read about prosperity and getting to the heart of what keeps us from our own prosperity. The perfect balance of inner work for outer results. A must read!
YES YES HELL NO! This book is particularly special to me as it’s written by one of my own coaches and was inspired during one of our coaching sessions. Brian’s concept of YES YES HELL NO and the 3 voices has been so valuable to me personally, I said one day, “That should be a book and it’s a great title!” Sure, enough. Here it is. It’s so good it’s practically a life manual.
A World Gone Social The definitive book on social media for today’s world. Biggest take away was realizing how social media has transitioned over the years from being just a place to hang out to a place where we build communities. Excellent read!
YOUTILITY – Why Smart Marketing is about Help not Hype One of the best business books to come along in years! Truly a must-read for today’s marketing and online presence. This book gave me a different perspective on so many things. And solidified how important it is to be USEFUL online. Fantastic!
Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World Right upfront, you need to understand what Michael Hyatt means by platform. He’s referring to it as if it were the platform you stand on giving a presentation. This fantastic book is about your online presence, social media, etc as the PLATFORM your business is standing on. Important stuff!
Happiness of Pursuit Finding the quest that will bring purpose to your life. This is a fantastic book by acclaimed author Chris Guillebeau. Chris is also the host of World Domination Summit. He’s just cool in every sense of the word! This book will make you think, it will inspire you, and hopefully make you reach further than you ever imagined. I believe we are living in a time when having a QUEST is more important than goals. The Happiness of Pursuit is ground breaking and right on trend with changes in the world.
How The World Sees You The follow up book to Sally Hogshead’s amazing Fascination Advantage Assessment. In this book you not only come to understand how the world sees you, now you can get to understand all 49 archetypes. I personally believe this is some of the most valuable information to come along in years for business and life!
Book Yourself Solid Michael Port’s book should be a staple in everyone’s business. What I particularly love about this book is that Michael expresses his beliefs and concepts. Even with a bit of “spirit”. Then offers very practical applications of the concepts. It has such application in your business and demonstrates best business practices that it’s almost a how-to book. I was fortunate to interview Michael for my podcast- Create Warriors. Check it out at blog.jeffreyshaw.com
To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others One of the best business books I have read in years. It’s also the most current book out there- right on message and up to date on trends. It’s overall message is THE business model of the future. A must read.
Play Your Bigger Game Rick Tamlyn is an incredible coach whom I’ve had the pleasure to work with. In “Play Your Bigger Game”, Rick beautifully offers the concept of thinking outside your normal way of thinking into a world a possibility. Thinking beyond your self-imposed limitations. The book has also become Bigger Game workshops and retreats that Rick facilitates around the world.
Go Giver Quite simply, you’d be crazy not to read this book. It’s short, to the point, easy to read and will change your life. Enough said, right? Books like this are my favorites. Business books that are philosophy based. It’s not about a bunch of business tips. It’s about a way of thinking that will change the way you are in business.
Delivering Happiness Tony Hsieh is a hero of mine as he is for many. My big take away was his ability to see opportunity in the moment. He didn’t have a ‘master plan’ for his life. He had an incredible ability to dance in the moment and make miracles happen.
Change or Die This book turns conventional theory on how sustainable change is created on it’s head. What creates change that lasts is the 3 R’s- Reframe, Relate and Repeat. It’s this theory that I base most of my work on in speaking, coaching and MasterMind. Love this!
Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead They may have been hippies but they were brilliant businessmen! This book is particularly valuable for the photo industry as a lesson on how to use digital technology and all it’s issues to your ADVANTAGE in the same way The Dead did in creating a cult following of fans.
Presence One of my all time favorite books about the spiritual side of business. I sometimes speak about Theory U- taking time to be fully present and for “letting come”. This is where this theory comes from.
Diamond Cutter This book started it all for me. I randomly picked this book up off the shelf many years ago. Truthfully because I thought business and Buddhism was an interesting combination! This is the only book in my life I read straight through, got to the last page and started all over again. At the end of the book there was a statement offering business coaching from the now closed Enlightened Business Institute. I called, was interviewed and then connected with a coach, Ron Porte, who I received coaching from for 7 years! It was Ron’s retirement that motivated me to become a coach. If I could do for others what Ron did for me that would be a life well spent. The story goes on- by coincidence there has always been a diamond period at the end of my logo. Through Ron, author Geshe Michael Roach sent me an autographed copy of the book for my 40th birthday (which by chance was 04/04/04). It’s one of my most treasured possessions. So read the book.
Jab Jab Jab Right Hook This is THE book for all things social media. It’s also a new release so the info is very current. Gary does a great job at creating the how-to book for all social media platforms. Excellent!
